The fast growing market of EV batteries raise high demands on equipment manufacturers. Manufacturing lines for EV batteries need to ramp up since the world wants to get rid of fossil fuels and in the meantime mobility needs to stay affordable. Driving clean cars on dirty batteries is also not acceptable.

The future production plants for EV batteries therefore need to run greener batteries and be more economical. Production needs to shift from pilot plants to giga plants.

Equipment manufacturers for these new plants need to cope with these challenges. Experiences from other markets need to be applied to this industry. Innovative developments of batteries and the manufacturing processes of batteries are a necessity.

Of course these equipment manufacturers need the knowledge and experience to bring the industry forward. The biggest change-over for this industry is building up, maintaining and increasing the benefits from networks. In short term no company will be able to be a full system integrator by itself. The industry demands the re-invention of cooperation since the market itself and new technology are not developed yet. In the meanwhile, there is a need for speed. End users of cars are demanding a quick turnaround.

As a (future) battery producer resulting demands will be communicated to equipment suppliers. Much will be related to control over time. Innovation processes need to be better managed to handle development of more quick customized equipment. Pro-actively new technology need to be included into new machinery to increase speeds and lower costs.

Installation processes need to be improved to shorten installation and commissioning times on new production sites. The after sales organization needs to guarantee the performance of the machine through the whole life time of the production line. The need for MRO parts and maintenance services must be monitored, predicted and delivered when needed. Servitization will reach higher levels then ever seen before.

To realize this equipment suppliers need competence. Competence internally and externally. This raises two challenges. First the challenge of hiring and developing the competence in house. Secondly to gain competence from cooperation with others. Both are critical factors to be successful. Since shortage of (technical) people is increasing and cooperation between (competitive) companies is not a natural skill, changing ‘normal’ behaviour is demanded.
