3rd April 2023 – IONETIC, the dynamic UK start-up specialising in electric vehicle (EV) battery pack technology, is further strengthening the expertise of its senior leadership team with the appointment of automotive executive, Dr. Andy Palmer, as its Chairman. 

Dr. Palmer joins IONETIC at a key stage in its development, as the business continues to focus on onboarding clients and planning the opening of its first giga-scale manufacturing facility in the UK. 

He will draw from his wealth of knowledge and experience to support strategic growth and sales as the business progresses towards ultimately achieving multi-GWh battery pack production capacity.

A leading figure on the global automotive stage, Dr. Palmer has gained over 44 years of experience in the industry. He has led transformational change at two of the most widely recognised vehicle manufacturers in the business, while helping to supercharge mass-market EV adoption. He is often referred to as the ‘Godfather’ of EVs.

As COO and Chief Planning Officer of Nissan Motor Corporation, Dr. Palmer oversaw the development and introduction of the world’s first mass-market EVs, the Nissan LEAF and Nissan e-NV200, before leading the launch of four core models and nine derivative vehicles as President & Group CEO of Aston Martin Lagonda.

  1. Energy Density
  2. Many existing commercially available battery packs have energy densities of 130-160Wh/kg.
    1. Car A has a module energy density of 197Wh/kg and a pack energy density of 156Wh/kg.
    1. The module used in Car B (which many niche vehicle companies use) has an energy density of 191Wh/kg and a pack energy density of 132Wh/kg.
    1. A VDA 390 module has an energy density of approximately 200Wh/kg. Used in Car C, it has a pack energy density of 144Wh/kg.
  3. IONETIC’s battery modules have an energy density of 226Wh/kg. IONETIC’s pack architecture is most similar to Car A, so a pack energy density of at least 180Wh/kg is targeted. This is a 36% improvement over Car B.
  1. Cost Reduction
  2. The current process to get a 70kWh battery pack into production includes going to a design consultancy to develop a prototype, putting that prototype into production in a new factory, and homologating at a test house.
    1. This process can ordinarily cost between £40-80m.
  3. Due to IONETIC’s technology, capabilities, and production strategy, this cost can be reduced to £4-10m, for a 70kWh battery pack. £40 million reduced by 90% is £4 million.
