What is a jelly roll?
Jelly roll is a product coming out of the electrode assembly lines/stacking machines, it’s a roll which is made of comprising composed of multiple layers of electrode sheets, separator films, and sometimes additional components such as tabs or current collectors, all rolled together into a cylindrical, rectangular shape depending upon the battery format to be produced.
Jelly rolls are critical part because they store and release energy Jelly rolls need to be produced and handled in clean/dry rooms, Proper handling and conveying of battery jelly rolls are essential to ensure their safety, quality, and performance.
Jelly roll handling and conveying:
Jelly roll generally requires handling between the stacking machine to the EL filling machine, it should be made sure here that jelly rolls do not get folded, miss aligned from the jelly roll sheets while handling and placing them over a conveyor. Maintaining proper traceability/tracking systems is critical in battery manufacturing to track the movement of jelly rolls This includes marking the batch numbers recording the batch numbers, production dates or battery chemistry and any other relevant information to track the history of each jelly roll, enabling effective traceability and quality control throughout the production process, condition monitoring is very necessary on variables like temperature, pressure, quality control parameters, that should be quickly identified and addressed if any issues that may arise.
One of the ways is Jelly rolls are smoothly conveyed in trays using Automated handling systems such as robotic arms, robots and conveyors can be programmed to handle jelly rolls gently and accurately, reducing the risk of human intervention and human errors. Vibration while conveying can lead to internal damage or loosening of the components within the jelly roll. Use vibration-dampening equipment or consider implementing shock-absorbing systems to reduce the risk.
As soon as the jelly rolls are reached the assembly area, they are inserted into the cans vertically in the case of cylindrical battery and to make sure there is no damage while insertion the can head is enlarged on the top end.
Things to keep in mind while handling the Jelly rolls.
- Clean dry room for making the jelly rolls.
- Automation while conveying/handling.
- Temperature controlled environment
- Low vibration while conveying
- Quality control or Inline inspection for Jelly rolls
- Gentle insertion into the cans
