The capacity for battery manufacturing is expected to reach 9TWh by 2030, this means millions of cell housings or cases to be produced for the prismatic and cylindrical cells. The inside of the battery components that is cathode, anode, separator and electrolyte are packed into the housings to protect it from external environment and give them strength mechanically.

Foreign bodies are highly undesirable in the EV Battery manufacturing process and if not taken care of it may result in severe consequences and even compromise the safety and performance of the batteries.

These housings are made up of Nickel-Plated Steel (NPS), and are about 3% of the total cost of the battery cell, these housings are manufactured through the presses and manufacture the cell housing, the process route is as follows:

  • Cupping (Blanking out of a coil material and first deep draw)
  • Redraw – number of times
  • Ironing – number of times
  • Trimming

After following these intensive processes there are presence of metallic dust, and other foreign bodies due to wear of the material or human intervention, there are lot of giga factories out there which are buying cell cases from the third-party manufacturers and there is high chance of contamination during transportation and while storing it in the store house of the manufacturer or the giga factory itself.

Jorgensen Engineering has the solution for this problem, and the cell case manufacturers or the giga factories themselves can easily integrate this solution right after their cell case manufacturing line where the empty cell cases are handled, conveyed to a High-pressure air stream which removes loose foreign bodies, turned upside down by means of a magnetic conveyor & Transported by a non-magnetic side-grip conveyor during cleaning, to ensure the release of magnetic particles.
